The Cherry Orchard - Sanssouci Summer Theatre

Theater / Dance / Cabaret
by Anton Chekhov

The widowed landowner Ranevskaya returns to her estate after a long stay abroad. For many years, she had lived far beyond her means and accumulated mountains of debt. Now she must part with her property. She is also to lose the blossoming cherry orchard, which evokes memories of her childhood in happier times. Lopakhin, who rose from humble beginnings to become a wealthy merchant, suggests having the trees cut down and building summer houses for tourists on the vast property. But Ranevskaya refuses. She is attached to her estate, which for generations has been a symbol of her social standing.

Anton Chekhov's last play premiered in 1904. At that time, clear signs of the declining world of the aristocracy were evident in Russia, and the answers for the future were still highly uncertain.

With great sensitivity and subtle humor, Chekhov portrays the characters of his play during a time of great change. His protagonists, with their anxieties about loss and their loneliness, their longings and risky plans, are relatable to today. Only the power of money proves to be a persistent constant.

Premiere: June 25, 2026
