Christmas tour with castle director Jörg Kirschstein, SPSG
The Grotto Hall presented a unique sight on Christmas Eve. The candlelight from the chandeliers and wall lights made the walls, decorated with crystals and precious stones, sparkle. In the Garden Hall, designed by Frederick the Great in the 18th century, Kaiser Wilhelm II and his family celebrated Christmas from 1889 to 1917. Princess Victoria Luise, Kaiser Wilhelm II's daughter, described the festivities as the highlight of family life.
This tour focuses on the imperial use of the palace. You will learn about the functions of the rooms during Advent, the delicacies served at Christmas dinner, and the gifts given to the emperor and empress and their seven children. Wilhelm II was the first monarch to use the New Palace as his preferred residence for several months each year.
