Space for something new? Photographs of the Old Market 1945–2025

How has the Old Market changed over the past 80 years? What has remained, what has disappeared – and what new things have emerged?
Historical photographs show the transformation from the war-destroyed Old Market in 1945 to the present day. Familiar buildings such as St. Nicholas Church and the Old Town Hall are visible over the decades, but also vanished places like the Hans Otto Theatre, the University of Applied Sciences, and the Staudenhof.

Impressive aerial photographs and insights into construction and reconstruction phases make the changes to the square visible – between historical buildings, GDR architecture and the reconstructions of recent years.

The special exhibition “Space for New Things? Visions for the Old Market 1945–2025” at the Potsdam Museum tells of the ideas, debates and controversies surrounding the Old Market. 
And in the parallel special exhibition “Christopher Lehmpfuhl”, the well-known plein air painter opens an artistic view of the present of the square.
