The longing for Italy, or the romantic on the throne, Frederick William IV.
It was a brilliant collaboration of three highly gifted designers: Crown Prince Frederick William (IV), himself an architecturally ambitious figure; the architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel; and the landscape artist Peter Joseph Lenné. In a grand parabolic design, they extended the Sanssouci park southward, creating one of the world's most beautiful examples of Neoclassical architecture. However, after the accession to the throne, Italian architecture truly took off. Ludwig Persius had only a few years after Schinkel's death to create a remarkable work, inspired by the Italianate dreams of the royal patron.
