Potsdam Theatre History(ies) – by bike from the Old Market to the Hedge Theatre
Explore Potsdam's theaters with cultural journalist Roland Schneider on a relaxed 13 km bike tour. He will guide you from Potsdam Central Station to six historical and contemporary stages in the state capital. Learn fascinating facts about the "Tin Can" theater and the actors' barracks in the old town before visiting the Otto Theater on the banks of the Havel River with its distinctive red fan-shaped roof, as well as other venues at Potsdam's central cultural hub, Schiffbauergasse. Lunch will be served in the theater canteen. Afterward, the tour continues to the Theaterklause, the historic site of the Hans Otto Theater. Following a detour to the "Zimmerbühne" (Chamber Stage), we will cycle to the New Palace in Sanssouci Park. The palace theater within the New Palace is currently undergoing renovation.
Our destination is the small but historically significant hedge theater right next door. Frederick the Great commissioned this open-air theater, framed by hedges, in the 18th century for the entertainment of the monarch and his guests. Later, it lay dormant for more than 150 years until its extensive restoration in 2012. As the highlight of the tour, experience this year's production of "The Cherry Orchard" by the Poetenpack Theater: Anton Chekhov's tragicomedy entertainingly depicts the social decline of a Russian aristocratic family around 1900. Actor Willi Händler will give you an exclusive introduction to the location and the play before the two-hour performance. A food truck will provide snacks and drinks. The tour ends around 20 p.m. at Potsdam Central Station.
Registration is required by June 19th: please send an email to tourismus@kulturfeste.de. After registration, you will receive the bank details for payment.
