Potsdam Winter Opera: La Resurrezione

With "La Resurrezione," George Frideric Handel created a captivating masterpiece of Baroque sonic splendor. Premiered in Rome in 1708, the work, poised between drama and contemplation, forms its own genre between oratorio and opera, and powerfully recounts the triumph of life over death. Angels and devils philosophize about the meaning of the resurrection and test their strength, while Maddalena, Cleofe, and Saint John mourn at Jesus' tomb.

Death and resurrection, grief and life, resignation and hope: Handel brings existential themes of man to the stage in virtuosic arias and colorful orchestral sounds, giving the resurrection story dramatic depth and emotional intensity.

Konrad Junghänel, who played a key role in the successful development of the Potsdam Winter Opera, will once again conduct. Annika Nitsch, who most recently directed at the National Theatre Mannheim and staged Udo Zimmermann's chamber opera "The White Rose" at the Gustav Adolf Memorial Church for the Nuremberg State Theatre, will direct. The set and costume design will be created by Linda Siegismund, who has previously worked for the Chemnitz Theatre, the Nuremberg State Theatre, and the Semperoper Dresden.

Following the acclaimed premiere of Johann Christian Bach's opera "Zanaida" in February 2026, the Potsdam Winter Opera will once again perform in the Church of Peace at Sanssouci this season due to the continued closure of the palace theater in the New Palace. In previous years, several Handel oratorios were impressively staged there for the Potsdam Winter Opera under the musical direction of Konrad Junghänel, such as Lydia Steier's celebrated production of "Jephtha" in 2013.
