Wolfgang Borchert's only play is more than a classic of postwar literature: "The Man Outside" is a poetic outcry against silence, against looking away, against repression. Written in 1947, just months before Borchert's untimely death, this play is more relevant today than ever. Beckmann, 25, returns home from a prisoner-of-war camp physically and mentally scarred, but instead of support or understanding, he finds only rejection. His fellow human beings have long since repressed the past. In a dreamlike journey, Beckmann encounters not only people, but also larger-than-life figures such as Death, the Elbe River, God – and the Other, a mirrored version of himself. In doing so, a multifaceted theatrical world unfolds, oscillating between realism, the grotesque, and lyricism – full of linguistic power, resistance, and existential depth.
