Under the Soviet Star – From Conference Venue to Secret City

guided tour / tour
With the end of the war in 1945, the area around Potsdam's New Garden was occupied by the Soviets for almost five decades. The tour begins at Cecilienhof Palace – the historic site of the Potsdam Conference. Traces such as Cyrillic inscriptions still commemorate this important Allied meeting. The route leads through the former amusement park for Soviet military personnel to the grounds of the former secret service town, "Military Town No. 7." In this "forbidden city," relics of a large memorial complex can be seen, along with the headquarters of Soviet military counterintelligence. The tour concludes in the courtyard of the former counterintelligence prison on Leistikowstrasse. There, the secret service held numerous Soviet and German citizens prisoner until 1991.
