Belvedere Klausberg

After the completion of the New Palace In 1769, as part of a beautification plan for the area surrounding the castle, Frederick the Great commissioned the construction of the Belvedere on the Klausberg to be built. It was the king's last construction project in Sanssouci. The designs, created by Georg Christian Unger, were based on a drawing by the Italian archaeologist Francesco Bianchini. As the first belvedere in Potsdam, the building established the tradition of architecturally designed viewpoints in the royal residence city. "Belvedere" translates as "beautiful view." From the Klausberg hill, charming vistas open up over the Sanssouci Park across to the hilly, lake-rich landscape and the city of Potsdam.
