Directly opposite the Bornstedt Crown Estate lies one of Potsdam's oldest cemeteries, established as early as 1599. It is known for the many famous personalities who found their final resting place here. Theodor Fontane wrote about the Bornstedt Cemetery, coining the famous phrase, "What dies in Sanssouci, is buried in Bornstedt."
Beneath shady trees and entwined with ivy, the Bornstedt Cemetery is a place of tranquility where one can wander through the history of Potsdam and, not least, Prussia. The gravestones often bear the names of deceased dignitaries, court officials, and royal gardeners, such as the Sello family. The graves of the renowned landscape gardener Peter Joseph Lenné, as well as the architects Friedrich Ludwig Persius and Reinhold Persius, and Ferdinand von Arnim, are also located here.
The Bornstedt Cemetery is best reached via Ribbeckstraße; it is only a few hundred meters from the Orangerie Palace. The cemetery is easily recognizable by its distinctive church tower, which is visible from afar.
Every first Saturday of the month from April to October, guided tours of the cemetery are offered by the association Friends of the Bornstedt Cemetery e. V.
