The three-story building was completed in 1874. By 1886, it was already too small for the large number of students and was expanded in 1891 with a two-story addition. Due to the growing student population and stricter building regulations, a renovation was planned starting in 1930 by city architect Paul Kuhnert (1872-1944). This renovation included horizontal windows in the style of the New Objectivity movement.
In 2003, the German Youth Hostel Association and the City Youth Council jointly built the "House of Youth" and the "Youth Hostel." This was a unique project in Germany, enabling close cooperation between youth work and youth tourism. The building was subsequently restored to its 1933 design.
