Welcome to the Potsdam Film Museum! Here you can experience film history from Babelsberg and around the world – in the oldest house in Potsdam's city center.
The Potsdam Film Museum is the oldest film museum in Germany. Since 1981 it has been located in the Marstall building next to the Brandenburg State Parliament.
The Prussian kings' riding stables, originally built as an orangery in 1685, acquired their present form in the 18th century under the direction of Sanssouci architect Knobelsdorff. Since 1981, this so-called Marstall (Royal Stables) in the historic center of Potsdam has been the main building of the Film Museum, housing exhibitions, a cinema, a shop, a restaurant, and offices. Until 1990 Film Museum of the GDR, stands Potsdam Film Museum Since then, it has been under the care of the state of Brandenburg and, since July 2011, has been part of the institute. Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF, formerly Konrad Wolf Film and Television University Potsdam-Babelsberg.
The permanent exhibition "Dream Factory. 100 Years of Film in Babelsberg" and changing exhibitions on international media topics transport visitors to the Marstall into the world of film; daily except Mondays, the cinema invites visitors to a diverse film program with international guests and silent film screenings on the Welte cinema organ.
The growing collections, encompassing Babelsberg film history, cinema and film technology, as well as the estates and bequests of some 250 filmmakers and much more, are a treasure trove for visitors, researchers, exhibition organizers, and journalists. A portion of the collections, comprising over 1 million objects, is open to the public through the visible storage facility during special opening hours and by appointment.
From the Marstall, you can reach the palaces and parks of the UNESCO World Heritage Site by tram; from the nearby Potsdam main train station, you can take the S-Bahn to Studio Babelsberg, the Babelsberg Film Park, the Film University and the other approximately 200 institutions and companies in the area.
