Establishment and development
The Leistikowstraße Memorial and Meeting Place in Potsdam was founded on December 5, 2008, initially as an independent foundation under the trusteeship of the Brandenburg Memorials Foundation. The founder was the Evangelical Church Relief Association (EKH), which, as the owner, contributed the building used by the Soviet military intelligence service after 1945, as well as the visitor center completed in 2008, to the new foundation. Since June 30, 2023, the memorial has been fully integrated into the Brandenburg Memorials Foundation, a public foundation funded by the State of Brandenburg and the Federal Government. The Leistikowstraße Memorial and Meeting Place has one staff position for the director, two full-time positions for memorial site education, and one half-time administrative position.
tasks and goals
The memorial sees itself as a contemporary history museum with special educational responsibilities. Its diverse activities are based on research and the collection and preservation of historical documents relating to the history of the Soviet remand prison. Through permanent and temporary exhibitions, events, and a broad educational program, the memorial provides information about the historical site and the fates of those imprisoned there. Its mission is complemented by a humanitarian commitment: the care and support of former prisoners and their families.
Every year on August 15th – the anniversary of the establishment of the prison by the Soviet secret service in 1945 – the memorial site hosts a commemorative event with a wreath-laying ceremony. The event honors the innocent people who suffered at this site between 1945 and 1991. At the same time, the memorial also commemorates the beginning of the civic engagement to preserve the building after the withdrawal of the last military units on August 15, 1994.
The memorial offers public and group tours of the permanent exhibition in the former prison building and of "Military Town No. 7". Further information is available at www.leistikowstrasse-sbg.de.
