The Glienicke Bridge lies in the heart of the parkland largely designed by Lenné. From here, one can see Babelsberg Palace and Park, the Church of the Redeemer in Sacrow, and Glienicke Palace. The current bridge dates from 1907. However, the first crossing over the Havel River was built as early as the 17th century.
During the GDR era, the border to West Berlin ran across the bridge. Therefore, it was closed to regular passenger traffic. The Glienicke Bridge became famous as the site of spy exchanges between the Soviet Union and the USA during the Cold War. It was reopened to visitors one day after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
