Large Refractor Potsdam

The "Great Refractor" is located on Telegrafenberg hill in the "Albert Einstein Science Park." Built in 1899, this double telescope is the fourth largest refracting telescope in the world – one tube is for viewing, the other for photography. The Great Refractor is an important monument to the history of the precision mechanics and optics industry in the late 19th century and to the beginnings of the emerging field of astrophysical research.
The Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP) regularly hosts public observation evenings with explanations of the telescope. Dates can be found on the institute's website.
