Historic Mill of Sanssouci

Museums
Historical monuments and sites
The Historic Mill blends picturesquely into the parkland of Sanssouci. After the original post mill, built in 1738, had to be demolished due to its dilapidated condition and replaced by a Dutch-style windmill, the structure was destroyed in World War II. Since 1993, the sails of the Historic Mill have once again been turning, visible from afar. Legend has it that Frederick II, disturbed by the mill's clattering, demanded that the miller, Grävenitz, tear it down. However, when the miller threatened to take the matter to the Imperial Court, the king complied.

The gallery windmill still produces flour today, but it also serves as a museum with a permanent exhibition on milling history spread across four levels. The traditional windmill, its history, and modern mills are vividly presented. Visitors can experience the physically demanding work of milling flour firsthand in the permanent exhibition. The mill processes three types of grain: organic rye, organic wheat, and organic spelt. The mill has been certified organic since 2011 and is regularly inspected by food safety authorities. All machinery is wind-powered. The mill can operate in winds ranging from force three to a maximum of force eight. Depending on the wind strength and power requirements, the wind-exposed area can be adjusted. The sails on the wings can be fully or partially furled.

In a small shop on the ground floor of the mill, you can buy products like Sanssouci flour. Besides books and postcards, they also offer snacks and drinks. The most pleasant place to sit is under the pergola covered in golden rain trees, with a view of the New Chambers.
