The Royal VineyardThe vineyard likely originated from the initiative of the winegrower and grenadier Werley and was established in Potsdam in 1769 by order of Frederick II. Werley came from the Rhineland and wanted to bring the winegrowing tradition prevalent there to Potsdam. The Dragon House, located in the eastern part of the vineyard, was built for him as a residence by the architect Carl von Gontard. Above the vineyard stands the Belvedere on the Klausberg hill, built between 1770 and 72. South of the vineyard lies the mulberry avenue, running from west to east to Sanssouci Palace.
From May to September, the Royal Vineyard is open to visitors on Tuesdays and Thursdays (except public holidays). An exhibition illustrates the effort involved in cultivating wine on the Royal Vineyard during the time of kings and emperors and how it is continued today. In summer, events such as the "Royal Wine Festival" and the "Potsdam Wine Tables" take place. Individual guided tours, wine tastings, and picnics can be booked for groups. Depending on the theme, wines from the Royal Vineyard, as well as wines from Brandenburg and other German wine regions, are served. Small culinary delights make the evening an unforgettable experience.
