Machine hall in Schiffbauergasse (Potsdam factory)

The machine hall was built on Papenhorn after 1945. Designed by Karl Gottfried Pust, the building boasts a finely structured neoclassical facade that still appears attractive and contemporary. Papenhorn is a natural promontory created by reclaiming land from rubble from Potsdam's city center, stretching from Türkstraße to Papenhorn. The building housed the machine shop of the gasworks, which began operating in 1856 and was founded by the Berlin entrepreneur Julius Conrad Freund. Gas valves and pipe fittings were among the items produced here. After its later conversion into the VEB Energiekombinat (state-owned energy combine), gas, coke, and tar were produced for the city of Potsdam at this industrial site until its closure in 1990. Since its renovation in 2006, the former machine hall has been used as a diverse event venue. The fabrik Potsdam, a dance and community center, is located here.
