Natural History Museum Potsdam

Museums
The Potsdam Natural History Museum awakens interest, enthusiasm, and understanding for nature and animals right on our doorstep. The museum's exhibitions offer insights into the biodiversity of insects, fish, birds, and mammals found in the state of Brandenburg, while special exhibitions also address topics of national and international significance. The museum's cold-water aquarium is home to approximately 40 native fish species, from the common roach to the European catfish.
Sponsorship
The Potsdam Natural History Museum is a municipal museum and falls under the purview of the Education, Culture, Youth, and Sports Department of the City of Potsdam. The director's immediate superior is Dr. Birgit-Katharine Seemann, Head of the Culture and Museums Department. The director's superior is Mayor Mike Schubert.
Our history
The Potsdam Natural History Museum is located in the former "Ständehaus der Zauche," a historic building in the center of Potsdam. Built in 1770 according to plans by Georg Christian Unger, it was heavily damaged during World War II. The museum's history is closely linked to that of the present-day Potsdam Museum – Forum for Art and History, as both were founded in 1909 as the Potsdam Municipal Museum. In 1953, they jointly operated as the Local History Museum, later as the District Museum, and from 1982 as the Potsdam Museum, comprising the departments of Nature and Environment as well as History and Art. After 1989, the two collections were separated, paving the way for two separate municipal museums. Since November 14, 2001, the Potsdam Natural History Museum has been an independent institution.
The Natural History Museum Potsdam is one of four participating museums in the MUSEUM combination ticket.
