St. Nicholas Church on the Old Market Square, with its dome visible from all directions, is arguably the most striking building in Potsdam, the capital of Brandenburg, and exudes an Italian flair. After the old St. Nicholas Church burned down in 1795, its reconstruction was planned in 1800. However, the laying of the foundation stone for the building designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel was delayed until 1837.
After considering various planning proposals, a central building design, resembling a cube on a square base, was chosen. Initially, only the substructure was completed. The domed roof was added later. The church was reconsecrated in 1850.
After suffering severe damage during World War II, the church was consecrated for the third time in 1981. Since then, services have been held every Sunday.
The church also hosts numerous concerts and events. Admission to the church and the tower is €5,00. From the viewing platform, visitors enjoy a magnificent view of the entire city.
St. Nicholas Church is a church accessible by bicycle and is located near the R1 European cycle route.
