The building now known as the Offizze was designed by Carl Hampel in 1840 as a garrison laundry. During the construction of the Royal Garrison Steam Laundry, the present-day Waschhaus (Wash House), the building was converted into an inspector's house in 1882. The yellow bricks are a testament to early Gründerzeit (late 19th-century) industrial architecture and relics of Prussian building traditions at this location. During the GDR era, the former inspector's house was part of the premises of VEB Rewatex, a large-scale laundry. The building was renovated and further converted in 2005. Today, it houses offices and serves as the central visitor information point on Schiffbauergasse.
