Four columns support a sphinx, and two black statues of gods stand beside the gate. Behind the tall windows is the orangery, where delicate plants overwinter. The richly decorated concert hall in the central section—the Palm Hall—is still used for performances today. King Frederick William II was a quite gifted cellist and gave concerts here himself. Indeed, during his visit to Potsdam, Mozart composed a cello part for the first Prussian Quartet in D major, which the king is said to have premiered. In front of the orangery is a beautiful perennial garden.
