Founded in 1909 by Potsdam citizens, the Potsdam Museum underwent a reorganization in 2012, now also incorporating supra-regional and international developments. The museum is housed in its historic founding location, the former Old Town Hall, a remarkable Baroque building. It was built between 1753 and 1755, commissioned and designed by Frederick II, by the architects Jan Boumann the Elder and Christian Ludwig Hildebrandt.
As a cultural and research institution, our museum collects, preserves, and researches works of art, historical artifacts, and documents relating to the city's history and culture from the Middle Ages to the present day. With over 270.000 objects, it houses one of Brandenburg's largest collections of art, cultural, and regional history. The main focus of the collection covers the 19th to 21st centuries, encompassing the following areas: Fine arts, photography, militaria, everyday culture and applied arts, writing and printing as well as extensive scientific Museum LibraryFor younger visitors, there are varied and exciting museum education programs.
The Potsdam Museum is one of 4 participating museums of the MUSEUM combination ticket.
