Sanssouci Palace

castles and parks
Potsdam's most famous palace was built between 1745 and 1747 by Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff according to the ideas and sketches of Frederick II. Frederick wanted to cultivate plums, figs, and grapes just outside Potsdam. This desire is reflected in the famous terraced vineyards. Sanssouci served him as a summer residence, a refuge in difficult times, and a pleasure palace where he enjoyed his private life.

The palace is considered a masterpiece of German Rococo architecture. Its rooms, characterized by splendor and elegance, retain their original furnishings and house masterpieces by Watteau, Panini, and Pesne.
