Winzerberg

gardens and parks
The WinzerbergIt is a terraced vineyard near Sanssouci Palace, which was used for growing wine and fruit. The entrance is a triumphal arch with a wrought-iron gate at the corner of Schopenhauerstrasse and Weinbergstrasse.

In 1763, Frederick II created a terraced vineyard on the grounds below the Mühlenberg hill to cultivate fruit for the court. Some renovations were carried out between 1790 and 94, including repairs to the roof and the installation of stone sills. King Frederick William IV had envisioned erecting a temple-like monument to Frederick on the hilltop. In 1838, Karl Friedrich Schinkel revised the plans for the Via Triumphalis, the high road. The triumphal arch, built in 1850/51 according to plans by Friedrich August Stüler, was finally realized. During the next modernization in 1848, under the direction of garden director Peter Joseph Lenné, the Winzerberg vineyard was redesigned in the Tuscan style. This included facing the lowest terrace wall with exposed brickwork and adding a staircase. Ludwig Ferdinand Hesse executed his planned design for the vintner's house in 1849.

Since 2005, theThe Winzerberg Building Association (Winzerberg Bauverein eV) is responsible for the reconstruction of the terraced gardens and the maintenance of the green spaces. Winzerberg is open during the summer months for the "Bacchus Hour" and for concerts and other events. Guided tours are also offered for those interested in history.
