Chicory mill in Schiffbauergasse

The chicory mill is located in Schiffbauergasse on the shores of the Tiefen See (Deep Lake). First mentioned in 1799 in the Berlin suburbs, the mill was known as "Knochenhauer'sche Zichorien-Fabrique" (Knochenhauer's Chicory Factory). Here, coffee substitute was produced, officially called Mocca-Faux, but colloquially known as Muckefuck. The mill ceased operations in 1813. By this time, the mill had already lost its sails, giving it its distinctive shape. It was subsequently used as a roofing felt factory, and the striking crenellated parapet was added. The residential building with its arched windows was built later. Until 2000, the mill was saved from ruin by its residents, and finally, in 2006, its restoration, in accordance with historic preservation guidelines, was completed. Today, it houses the "Restaurant Il Teatro."
