Over 100 years of fascinating film history await discovery in Potsdam. To this day, the city, with Studio Babelsberg, offers the best production conditions. Since 2019, Potsdam has been Germany's first UNESCO Creative City of Film. Numerous famous filming locations can be discovered on a stroll through the city center and the palace gardens. From the Old Market Square to the New Palace in Sanssouci Park, the tour follows the trail of feature films and television series – made in Babelsberg. The Film Museum, part of the Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF, located near the Old Market Square, brings the filmmaking process to life, from script to finished film. It's the perfect place to immerse yourself in film history. In the museum's vicinity, you'll find many scenes from the Fridericus Rex films of the 1920s – such as the Lustgarten (Pleasure Garden) and the Old and New Market Squares. Actor Otto Gebühr was so convincing in his role as the great Prussian king that the people of Potsdam greeted him on the street as Frederick. St. Nicholas Church on the Old Market Square can be seen in the film "The Wave." Continuing towards the city center, you reach the Dutch Quarter – a popular location in the TV series "SOKO Potsdam," "Jerks," and "Homeland." Children might also recognize the quarter from "Witch Lili." A visit to the Town Hall on Friedrich-Ebert-Straße is a must for crime drama fans. The building appears in shows such as "Polizeiruf 110" and "Pfarrer Braun." The route continues along Hegelallee and Brandenburger Straße to Sanssouci Park, a long-standing film location. Konrad Wolf filmed "I Was 19" in the New Chambers in 1968, and Hollywood relocated the Orangery Palace to Istanbul in "Around the World in 80 Days."
Anyone with tired feet after this cinematic walk can take bus 695 from the New Palace – where, among other things, "The Emperor's New Clothes" was filmed – back to the city center or the main train station.
