The walk leads through the city center and feels like a journey through time. From the main train station, the path leads to Freundschaftsinsel (Friendship Island) – a horticultural gem designed by Karl Foerster. From here, you can already see the Alter Markt (Old Market Square). With St. Nicholas Church and the Brandenburg State Parliament, built on the site of the former City Palace, the Potsdam Museum, and the Museum Barberini, this square offers a fascinating blend of modernity, culture, art, and politics.
The route continues to Bassinplatz with its regional weekly market and the Church of St. Peter and Paul. The red brick of the Dutch Quarter is visible from afar. Frederick William I, the Soldier King, wanted to attract Dutch craftsmen to Potsdam with this distinctive architecture. Small cafés, boutiques, and the Jan Bouman House invite visitors to linger.
Not far from here lies Brandenburg Street, affectionately known as "Broadway" by Potsdam residents. Alternatively, you can extend your walk and visit the Russian Colony Alexandrowka with its distinctive wooden houses. From here, it's not far to Sanssouci Park. With its ornate gardens and the summer palace on the vineyard terraces, it tells the story of Frederick II, Frederick the Great. Via Luisenplatz and through the Brandenburg Gate, you'll return to Brandenburg Street. Passing the canal and the New Market, the route leads back to the main train station.
