Traveling through England, Holland, Russia, and Italy – all in one day? And on foot, no less? Potsdam is rich in European influences. A leisurely stroll here allows you to traverse Europe effortlessly in a short time. It is the aspirations of the rulers, as well as the friendships and political connections of the Hohenzollern dynasty, that shape the city's character today.
The tour through Europe begins in Potsdam's city center at St. Peter and Paul Church, originally built for Belgian skilled workers. Just a few steps away lies the Dutch Quarter, where small boutiques and cozy cafes invite you to browse and linger. The Jan Bouman House offers insights into the fascinating history of the quarter, which Frederick William I commissioned for Dutch craftsmen. Passing through the neo-Gothic Nauener Gate heading out of town, you'll find yourself in a scene straight out of a Russian fairytale in about 10 minutes. The Alexandrowka colony, with its Alexander Nevsky Memorial Chapel, was built by Frederick William III in memory of his friend Tsar Alexander I. The Russian-style wooden houses became home to 12 Russian singers and their families. From here, you'll need to climb a few meters to reach the tour's destination, but the ascent is well worth it. From the towers of the Belvedere Pfingstberg, you'll be rewarded with arguably the most beautiful view of Potsdam. With the palace, Frederick William IV realized his dream of an Italy in Prussia. La dolce vita – this feeling is especially noticeable here during the summer months!
