This city walk is like a short journey through Potsdam's history – offering glimpses into the past as well as the city's future. The tour begins in the historic center at the Old Market Square. This square reflects a fascinating blend of modernity, art, culture, and politics. With St. Nicholas' Church, the Museum Barberini, the Potsdam Museum, and the Brandenburg State Parliament housed within the old City Palace, the heart of the city shines with renewed splendor. On a clear day, climbing the 216 steps to the viewing platform of St. Nicholas' Church is an absolute must. From here, you'll be rewarded with a breathtaking view of Potsdam's cultural landscape. From the Old Market Square, the route leads past the State Parliament building to the Potsdam Film Museum. The former stables of the City Palace now document the city's more than 100-year film history. The tour continues via the New Market Square with its striking architecture to the old city canal. After this once-practical waterway was filled in, a section of the canal has been restored. A small bridge leads into the baroque city center. Regional crafts, local shops, and restaurants invite visitors to stroll along the shopping street, affectionately known as "Broadway" by Potsdam residents. From there, you can continue into the Dutch Quarter. Frederick William I created this remarkable district to attract Dutch craftsmen to Potsdam. Today, it's home to cozy shops, cafés, and bars that evoke a Dutch atmosphere and invite you to linger.
